<p>The City of Hancock, founded in the 1850s by early copper explorers, is a progressive and welcoming city of 4,500 residents on the north shore of Portage Lake and is the northernmost city in Michigan. Hancock was founded by the Quincy Mining Company in 1859 during the heyday of the Keweenaw's copper mining boom. The town was best known for its famous Quincy Mine nicknamed "Old Reliable" as the mine produced copper continuously for 83 years paying stockholders millions of dollars in dividends. The Quincy Mine ceased operations in 1945, but the City of Hancock remains as reliable as its early immigrant settlers. Today, the City of Hancock is the gateway to the Keweenaw Peninsula for tourists from all over the world that discover the natural beauty of the Keweenaw, Isle Royale National Park, and Keweenaw Historical National Park. The City of Hancock is actively preserving its historical buildings while still looking to the future with a progressive attitude for accepting change. The City of Hancock is a great place to live, work and play. The city has become a place to celebrate different festivals throughout the year such as Heikinpaiva, Bridgefest, Engineering Day, Kids on the Green, Key Ingredients, Canal Run, Movies on the Green, Canal ROCK, and End of Summer Celebration to name a few.
