About

The Asian American Resource Center's (AARC) Senior Program invites community members to help and connect with older LEP (limited English proficiency) adults through volunteering!

Volunteers will participate in freeform conversation sessions with LEP Asian American seniors. Senior participants are encouraged to attend sessions with questions in mind, although conversations tend to be flexible and unstructured. (Please note that volunteers will not be teaching English, just helping seniors practice English and socializing with them!)

Conversation session shifts are currently scheduled for every Thursday; more shifts and session timeslots TBA. During the shift, volunteers will converse 1:1 with each senior for 30 minutes.

Requirement Details

Fluency in English is required for this position.

In order to participate in multiple sessions, volunteers must complete a criminal background investigation (CBI) form mandated by the City of Austin due to proximity with vulnerable populations. Volunteers may participate in up to ONE session before being required to complete the CBI.

Perks

The AARC provides free meals to seniors on Thursdays via Meals on Wheels. Volunteers who would like one are welcome to have a lunch after their session!
